Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out,
and the spark of his fire shall not shine.
The light shall be dark in his tabernacle,
and his candle shall be put out with him.
The steps of his strength shall be straitened,
and his own counsel shall cast him down.
For he is cast into a net by his own feet,
and he walketh upon a snare.
The gin shall take him by the heel,
and the robber shall prevail against him.
The snare is laid for him in the ground,
and a trap for him in the way.
Terrors shall make him afraid on every side,
and shall drive him to his feet.
His strength shall be hungerbitten,
and destruction shall be ready at his side.
It shall devour the strength of his skin:
even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.
His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle,
and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.
It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his:
brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.
His roots shall be dried up beneath,
and above shall his branch be cut off.
His remembrance shall perish from the earth,
and he shall have no name in the street.
He shall be driven from light into darkness,
and chased out of the world.
He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people,
nor any remaining in his dwellings.
They that come after him shall be astonied at his day,
as they that went before were affrighted.
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked,
and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.
Job 18:5-21
Then they that feared The LORD spake often one to another: and The LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared The LORD, and that thought upon His name.

Eliphaz (3)
I will shew thee, hear me;
and that which I have seen I will declare;
Which wise men have told from their fathers,
and have not hid it:
Unto whom alone the earth was given,
and no stranger passed among them.
The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,
and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
A dreadful sound is in his ears:
in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,
and he is waited for of the sword.
He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it?
he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid;
they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
For he stretcheth out his hand against GOD,
and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
He runneth upon him, even on his neck,
upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
Because he covereth his face with his fatness,
and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
And he dwelleth in desolate cities,
and in houses which no man inhabiteth,
which are ready to become heaps.
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,
neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
He shall not depart out of darkness;
the flame shall dry up his branches,
and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity:
for vanity shall be his recompence.
It shall be accomplished before his time,
and his branch shall not be green.
He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,
and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate,
and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity,
and their belly prepareth deceit.

Job (2)
But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee;
and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee:
and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Who knoweth not in all these
that the hand of The LORD hath wrought this?
In whose hand is the soul of every living thing,
and the breath of all mankind.
Doth not the ear try words?
and the mouth taste His meat?
With the ancient is wisdom;
and in length of days understanding.
With Him is wisdom and strength,
He hath counsel and understanding.
Behold, He breaketh down, and it cannot be built again:
He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
Behold, He withholdeth the waters, and they dry up:
also He sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
With Him is strength and wisdom:
the deceived and the deceiver are His.
He leadeth counsellors away spoiled,
and maketh the judges fools.
He looseth the bond of kings,
and girdeth their loins with a girdle.
He leadeth princes away spoiled,
and overthroweth the mighty.
He removeth away the speech of the trusty,
and taketh away the understanding of the aged.
He poureth contempt upon princes,
and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.
He discovereth deep things out of darkness,
and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.
He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them:
He enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth,
and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
They grope in the dark without light,
and He maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

Canst thou by searching find out GOD?
canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do?
deeper than hell; what canst thou know?
The measure thereof is longer than the earth,
and broader than the sea.
If He cut off, and shut up,
or gather together, then who can hinder Him?
For He knoweth vain men:
He seeth wickedness also; will He not then consider it?
For vain man would be wise,
though man be born like a wild ass's colt.
If thou prepare thine heart,
and stretch out thine hands toward Him;
If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away,
and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.
For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot;
yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:
Because thou shalt forget thy misery,
and remember it as waters that pass away:
And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday:
thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.
And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope;
yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
But the eyes of the wicked shall fail,
and they shall not escape,
and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.

Job (1)
I know it is so of a truth:
but how should man be just with GOD?
If He will contend with him,
he cannot answer Him one of a thousand.
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength:
who hath hardened himself against Him, and hath prospered?
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not:
which overturneth them in His anger.
Which shaketh the earth out of her place,
and the pillars thereof tremble.
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not;
and sealeth up the stars.
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens,
and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades,
and the chambers of the south.
Which doeth great things past finding out;
yea, and wonders without number.
Lo, He goeth by me, and I see Him not:
He passeth on also, but I perceive Him not.
Behold, He taketh away, who can hinder Him?
who will say unto Him, What doest thou?
If GOD will not withdraw His anger,
the proud helpers do stoop under Him.

Bildad (1)
Doth GOD pervert judgment?
or doth the Almighty pervert justice?
If thy children have sinned against Him,
and He have cast them away for their transgression;
If thou wouldest seek unto GOD betimes,
and make thy supplication to the Almighty;
If thou wert pure and upright;
surely now He would awake for thee,
and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
Though thy beginning was small,
yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age,
and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:
(For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing,
because our days upon earth are a shadow:)
Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee,
and utter words out of their heart?
Can the rush grow up without mire?
can the flag grow without water?
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down,
it withereth before any other herb.
So are the paths of all that forget GOD;
and the hypocrite's hope shall perish:
Whose hope shall be cut off,
and whose trust shall be a spider's web.
He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand:
he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.
He is green before the sun,
and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
His roots are wrapped about the heap,
and seeth the place of stones.
If he destroy him from his place,
then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
Behold, this is the joy of his way,
and out of the earth shall others grow.
Behold, GOD will not cast away a perfect man,
neither will He help the evil doers:
Till He fill thy mouth with laughing,
and thy lips with rejoicing.
They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame;
and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

Eliphaz (2)
I would seek unto GOD,
and unto GOD would I commit my cause:
Which doeth great things and unsearchable;
marvellous things without number:
Who giveth rain upon the earth,
and sendeth waters upon the fields:
To set up on high those that be low;
that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.
He disappointeth the devices of the crafty,
so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.
He taketh the wise in their own craftiness:
and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.
They meet with darkness in the daytime,
and grope in the noonday as in the night.
But He saveth the poor from the sword, from their mouth,
and from the hand of the mighty.
So the poor hath hope,
and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
Behold, happy is the man whom GOD correcteth:
therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
For He maketh sore, and bindeth up:
He woundeth, and His hands make whole.
He shall deliver thee in six troubles:
yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
In famine He shall redeem thee from death:
and in war from the power of the sword.
Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue:
neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh:
neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field:
and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace;
and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.
Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great,
and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age,
like as a shock of corn cometh in his season.
Lo this, we have searched it, so it is;
hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying
Shall mortal man be more just than God?
shall a man be more pure than his maker?

The Israelites Confess Their Sins
Stand up and praise the Lord your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting.
Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are The Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.
You have kept your promise because you are righteous.
You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day.
You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good. You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses.
But they, our forefathers, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and did not obey your commands. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them.
You gave your good Spirit to instruct them.
You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. You made their sons as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their fathers to enter and possess. Their sons went in and took possession of the land. They ate to the full and were well-nourished; they reveled in your great goodness.
But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they put your law behind their backs. They killed your prophets, who had admonished them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies. So you handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.
But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.
You warned them to return to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, by which a man will live if he obeys them. Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen. For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you admonished them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you handed them over to the neighboring peoples. But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.
In all that has happened to us, you have been just; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong. Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our fathers did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the warnings you gave them. Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.
But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our forefathers so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces. Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.

Opposition to the Rebuilding
Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

Nehemiah's Prayer
And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, And said,
I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love Him and observe His commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto Me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.
For I was the king's cupbearer.

Ezra's Pray About Intermarriage
O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens. Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from The LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in His holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage. For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness. Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.
And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this; Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

The Return to Jerusalem
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of Him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance. For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek Him; but His power and His wrath is against all them that forsake Him. So we fasted and besought our God for this: and He was intreated of us.

King Artaxerxes' Letter to Ezra
I make a decree, that all they of the people of Israel, and of his priests and Levites, in my realm, which are minded of their own freewill to go up to Jerusalem, go with thee. Forasmuch as thou art sent of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand;
The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God, those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons? Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
And thou, Ezra, after the wisdom of thy God, that is in thine hand, set magistrates and judges, which may judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and teach ye them that know them not. And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.

Gatekeepers
..and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.
